In this second edition of the “Oldies But Newies” playlist, we take a musical trip to the past while firmly staying in present day as we discover and explore a genre of music that recreates and pays tribute to the R&B and Retro Soul sounds of the past.

The bands and artists in these playlists, pay tribute while creating their own sound with music that pays tribute to the 50s, 60s, & 70s soul, funk, doowop, jazz, and indie pop and indie soul sounds. The music played in these playlists comes to us from recent bands and artists from the 2010s and 2020s. The style of the music is categorized as “Oldies”, but they have been recently recorded and released, which make them indie new music, or “Newies”.

Straying from our usual Indie music selections, this playlist evokes a sense of nostalgia and presents an intriguing musical genre to delve into. We invite you to embark on this journey with us, affectionately dubbed “Oldies But Newies.”

In tis second edition of the playlist, we gives the keys to the musical vehicle call “Oldies But Newies” to the following artists who help shape this playlist since the first episode with artists such as Durand Jones and the Indications, Cuco, Joey Quinones and Thee Sinseers, Me & Mrs Jacobs and The McCharmlys. We also feature new artists to this playlist such as Sister Cookie, Kaylee Lauren, Postmodern Jukebox, and a classic by Pearl Jam. We also add a classic jam from 2017 from a now defunct band Harumph.

Durand Jones & The Indications are a modern soul band with deep roots in retro R&B and a flair for timeless grooves. Formed in 2012 at Indiana University, the group centers around vocalist Durand Jones, drummer/vocalist Aaron Frazer, and guitarist Blake Rhein. Their sound blends classic soul influences—think Sam Cooke and Curtis Mayfield—with contemporary polish, earning them a devoted following among soul revivalists and lowrider oldies fans alike.

Their latest album, “Flowers” (2025), marks a creative high point, showcasing their evolution from gritty basement recordings to lush, cinematic soul. The track “Lovers’ Holiday” is a standout—a breezy, romantic escape that feels like a postcard from paradise, and is a dreamy ode to love and wanderlust. The song’s instrumentation features smooth vocals, flute flourishes, and laid-back percussion, creating a sun-drenched vibe perfect for slow dancing or daydreaming.

His 2025 single “Walk the Way” from the album “Ridin’” is a soulful, melancholic ballad that dives deep into the emotional aftermath of a breakup. Joey Quiñones & Thee Sinseers are torchbearers of modern Chicano soul, hailing from East L.A. and steeped in the rich traditions of lowrider oldies, vintage R&B, and classic doo-wop. Their 2025 single “If We Try” is a standout release from Colemine Records—a soulful duet between Joey and Adriana Flores that captures the emotional tension of love on the brink.

The McCharmlys are a retro rock band from Santa Ana, California, known for their infectious blend of doo-wop, surf, and 1960s-style rock ‘n’ roll. With a sound that’s equal parts nostalgic and fresh, they’ve built a loyal following across punk, new wave, and rockabilly scenes. Their performances are high-energy and heartfelt, often described as “rock ’n’ roll for the heartbroken”.

Their 2025 single “Break My Heart”, released through Nutone Records, is a shimmering slice of vintage soul with a modern twist. Produced at Penrose Studios by Anthony Masino (who’s worked with Thee Sacred Souls and The Altons). The track features singer’s Angie Monroy’s emotive vocals that channel classic heartbreak ballads.

The song was released as part of a double A-side with “You’ll Be Fine,” and together they showcase the band’s knack for crafting timeless tunes that feel like they belong on a dusty jukebox in a neon-lit diner. If you’re into artists like Los Yesterdays or Thee Sinseers, The McCharmlys are a must-add to your playlist.




Harumph is a pop-infused band known for their soulful and eclectic sound. One of their standout tracks is “Move”, which showcases their vibrant musical style and heartfelt lyrics, and is off the album, “Threes”, released in 2017.




Pearl Jam is a legendary American rock band formed in Seattle in 1990, known for their raw sound, introspective lyrics, and activism. One of their lesser-known but heartfelt tracks is “Soldier of Love”, a cover song, which was originally performed by Arthur Alexander, released in 1962. It was issued as the B-side to the single “Where Have You Been (All My Life)”, which reached #58 on the Billboard Hot 100 in June of that year.

Pearl Jam’s version was released as part of the No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees compilation in 1999.

“Fade Into the Wine” is a soulful and emotionally charged track, released in 2024 as part of their EP “Walking With My Shadows”.

Founded in 2011 by pianist Scott Bradlee in New York City, PMJ has featured over 70 performers and toured globally, earning over 1.9 billion YouTube views.

Their cover of “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan, reimagined this modern queer anthem as a 1960s Lesley Gore-style girl group ballad, dripping with retro drama and heartbreak.

Why It Works? The transformation of “Good Luck, Babe!” into a 1960s heartbreak anthem amplifies the song’s emotional core. PMJ’s vintage lens adds layers of nostalgia and theatricality, making it feel like a lost classic from the girl group era.
