We begin the month of February with more new / old music, this time shifting from our Rock playlist to retro sounds of our past. This is the 3rd edition of the “Oldies But Newies” playlist series, all about celebrating the golden sounds of the 50s, 60s, and 70s—think doo-wop, rock ’n’ roll, R&B, soul, and jazz—but with a twist: every song is performed by recent and today’s artists. The Oldies vibe and genre didn’t fade with the 50s and 60s—it lives on in the hearts and souls of talented artists who not only honor the music of that era but also bring it into the present with their own unique style.

Their lineup features Angelica Monroy on lead vocals, Eddie Gutiérrez and David Valenz on guitars, Carlos Canovas on bass, Bobby Greenig on drums, and Eddie Guadiana on saxophone.
“Tu Serás Mi Baby” is The McCharmlys’ Spanish‑language take on the classic “Be My Baby,” originally written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich, and Phil Spector. Their version was released in 2023 through Nu‑Tone and appears both as a standalone single and as part of their “Always Be (My Baby) / Tu Serás Mi Baby” 45.


THE MELLOWS

Benny Trokan is a New York–based musician best known for his work in the garage‑soul and retro‑pop world, as well as for playing bass with Spoon. His solo releases on Daptone/Wick Records showcase a warm, analog‑leaning sound rooted in ’60s soul, teen‑beat, and garage pop.
“Hey Lover” is Trokan’s soulful, mid‑tempo cover of The Five Emprees’ 1960s track, originally written by Don Covay. It appears on his 2022 release Hey Lovers, a 45 and digital EP issued by Daptone’s Wick imprint.Words.

Cuco is an American singer‑songwriter and producer known for blending bedroom pop, indie pop, lo‑fi, and touches of bossa nova and psychedelia into a dreamy, emotional sound. Born Omar Banos on June 26, 1998, he grew up in Hawthorne, California, the son of Mexican immigrants. He began playing multiple instruments as a child and started producing music from his bedroom as a teenager.
“Troublemaker” is one of the standout tracks from his 2025 project Ridin’ (Deluxe), blending his signature dreamy alt‑pop with richer live‑instrumentation influences. The song was released on May 9, 2025 under Walk The Trail, Inc., in partnership with Interscope Records.

It tells the story of a partner who’s both magnetic and destructive: stunning, smart, and charming, but also narcissistic and cold to the hurt she leaves behind.
